BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU (BJJ) – What is it?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art and self defense system focusing on grappling, especially on the ground.  The main principle of the art is that a smaller and/or weaker person can successfully defend against the attacks of a bigger or stronger assailant by using proper technique through which the assailant is submitted by joint-locks and chokeholds.  Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is practiced in sport grappling tournaments and mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions, as well as for self-defense.

Typically, a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner wears a gi (also known as a kimmono) which is used to facilitate joint-locks and chokeholds.  At Mohler Mixed Martial Arts, students can choose to grapple with or without a gi.  However, belt promotions are only awarded to students who meet certain skill requirements training with a gi.

Professor Allen Mohler is a 4th degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  While he also has a black belt in Kempo Karate and has trained in boxing, Muay Thai kickboxing and kali (weapons training), he has specialized in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for the past 20 years.  Professor Mohler is a world class coach and has produced many individual and team champions.

Beginners Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class

In these classes (offered as individual classes and as break-out groups in regular classes), a new student will learn basic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques in a fun and safe environment.   Each class addresses basic standing and/or ground techniques.  Our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program is for any age or fitness level, and regardless of prior martial arts experience.  Because safety is our number one concern, there is no grappling (commonly known as “rolling”) in the beginner program until you are ready (usually after six months).

Intermediate/Advanced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class

In these classes, the instructor (usually Professor Mohler) will demonstrate both basic and advanced techniques which are organized into a clearly defined and posted curriculum.  Through this technical format, Professor Mohler has removed the mystery associated with the journey from white belt to black belt.

Every Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class begins with a light warm-up.  The instructor will then present several Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and take-down techniques.  Students will practice the techniques with a partner slowly.  Repetition is the name of the game so that the students create the muscle memory to perform these techniques quickly and naturally.

After the technique portion of the class, students have the opportunity to roll (that is, grapple or spar) with a variety of training partners.  Safety is the primary concern while rolling. Any students who do not train in a safe and productive manner, will not be allowed to participate.  Rolling is 100% voluntary.

Our Goal is to Train but to also have Fun

Our instructors conduct all classes in a cooperative training environment.  We ensure that every new student has an informative, enjoyable experience.  Regardless of age, gender, or athletic ability, we treat everyone with the same respect.  Whether you are a beginner or an advanced student, we will take great care of you.  Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is our most popular class at both the Coppell and Dallas locations.
